Italy in the summer of 1900: At a country mansion two boys are born simultaneously. One as the son of the squire, one as the illegitimate child from agricultural workers. Between both, an instinctive relationship, that outlasts also later conflicts, develops despite their different origin. Everyone of them stands for a certain social class: Alfredo represents his interests as a member of the upper class as a squire, Olmo, however, engages in the just developing worker-movement. On the basis of the representation of two personal fates, half a century of Italian history unfolds, in which big political revolutions took place.

At the time of the American Civil War Joe and Tuco earn their money with a rather strange job: Joe delivers his by warrant searched friend to a sheriff, takes the money and waits for the execution. When the diligent put the rope around the neck Joe shoots the rope at the very last moment and flees with Tuca in order to do the very same thing at the next town. One day they hear about 200,000 dollars which should be buried somewhere. On the search for the money they meet the sadistic criminal Setenza who also is after the booty.
