John J. Dunbar, Lieutenant of the union troops becomes the hero against will. Because he wants to die instead of continuing his life as a handicapped he bravely rides over the battlefield with a shut foot. He is not hit and briefly later his troops force the Confederates back. As a reward Dunbar can choose his next command and selects a far away fort which turns out to be a shed without people. It does not take long until he meets his first native and becomes friends with them.
